Mother's Crochet by Doris Whatcott

This piece of crochet was made by my mother, Annie Gale Arnett, sometime before her death on October 5, 1956. So it is, at least 45 years old at this time and could be older. She was an avid crochet lady. She no doubt started making these peices with the plan to make another crocheted bedspread, of which she made many. It took many of these squares, crocheted together to make a bedspread. She made one for Dorthy and me (at our marriages), and one for her sister, Aunt Mae. She also traded one or more for beauty work at a beautician in Virden. And she made and sold some of these to various families in the Gila Valley. She used various patterns and designs, some of which were her own designs.
I feel that Mother would have wanted these items to be passed on to her desendants. If she were still here, she would probably be making crocheted items to give to each of you. She seldom sat down that she didn't pick up some on-going peice of crochet work-making her a very prolific producer of her crocheted items. It was not unusual for her to begin, in the morning, a baby outfit or a doily or item for a wedding reception and have it finished to take to the shower in the afternoon or evening. I dare say, that there were few babies born nor brides who did not have some item of "Aunt Ann's" crocheted handiwork in that valley.
This then, is given to you as a gift on her behalf. If you enjoy it, she would be happy.

(Prepared for you by Annie's daughter, Dorish Arnett Whatcott, Christmas 2001)
This story and the following picture was what Grandma Whatcott gave to all of here hundreds of grandchildren for Christmas in 2001. Thanks Grandma!
